Dahlia ‘Dandy Mix’ Z8 DahDMix
These dahlias are a very pretty collerette type with an inner ring(collar) of shorter quilled petals in a contrasting color to the outer petals. The 3 1/2″ flowers come in the many shades. Plants grow to about 2′. This mix seems to be much more popular in the UK, and it should be more well know here. I found some nice pics on a blog, Click Here. 50 seeds for $1.75.

.
.
cactus dahliaDahlia ‘Dwarf Cactus Mix
DahDCM
Since the other dahlia mixes are so popular, I figured I would add this one! There is something fun in the mystery of what color your dahlia plant will be. This is a compact variety growing 16-20″ tall with assorted cactus flower blooms. If you’ve not seen a cactus flowered dahlia, they are pretty cool. The petals are quilled giving a unique look to the blooms. The photo is an example of a cactus dahlia that I grew last year. 50 seeds for $2.00

.
.
Dahlia ‘Pompon Mix Z8 DahPoM
This is a mix of the fully double pompom flowered dahlias. The blossom colors cover the gamut that dahlias come in. The plants grow to about 3 1/2 feet. Excellent for the late summer border. 50 seeds for $1.75.

.
.
Dahlia RedskinDahlia ‘Redskin Mix Z8 DahRSk
I found another variety of dahlia worth growing from seed and not too expensive either. These plants have dark leaves of maroon red, and flower color varies with each plant, red, pink, white, yellow, etc. My photo is of just one variation you may get. The photos on Dave’s Garden show some more of the colors, Click Here.
In case you didn’t know, once you have a dahlia you have grown from seed, it will develop tubers and can be stored over the winter in a cool spot like a basement. I put mine in buckets with some peat moss, and forget about them until the weather turns nice in the spring. Then I bring them out of the basement and plant in pots, water, and in a little while the leaves are coming up. By mid/late summer you’ve got beautiful blooms until frost. Then of course back into the basement they go. 50 for $1.75.

.
.
Dahlia SunnyReggaeDahlia ‘Sunny Reggae DahSuR
By customer request~ This is a collerette type dahlia in assorted shades of light orange. It grows to a little less that 2′ tall. Photo is courtesy of Fleuroselect. 25 seeds for $2.00.

.
.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADatura, White (Datura inoxia aka Datura meteloides) DatW
Sometimes this plant gets a bad rap that I don’t think it deserves. It is poisonous, but so are quite a few other well loved garden plants. Click Here for a List of Common Poisonous Plants. My many dogs have never touched this plant. If you get close to it and smell (not the flowers,) it smells hideous, worse than a wet moldy rag left in the basement to become a bacterial festival. So unless you have very small children or a puppy that might bite before smelling, no one is going to put it in their mouth, and small children and puppies should not be left unattended in the garden anyway. Now the gorgeous large white flowers do smell good. They are attracting night flying moths to come pollinate. It is fun to sit out on a warm evening talking and watching blooms open. Datura is often nicknamed Devil’s Trumpets and gets confused with Brugmansia which have the nickname Angel’s Trumpet. It is easy to remember~ Devils are down below tooting their trumpets upwards while Angels are up above playing their trumpets downwards. 2-3′ tall and spreading. Sun. 50 seeds for $1.25.

.
.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADatura, Lavender ‘Lilac de Fleur’ aka La Fleur LilacDatL
This variety has attractive purple stems and oak type leaves. The light purple flowers are smaller than the white, but they still make a fine statement. Deadheading to stop seed pods will keep it blooming for a lot longer too. The right picture is of me behind a huge self seed one on July 23! In pots they stay more compact. Sun. 50 seeds for $1.

.
.
delphinium butterfly blueDelphinium grandiflorum ‘Blue Butterfly Z3 DelBBu
This plant has gorgeous strong blue flowers. The plants only grows to a little over a foot. This is a short lived perennial most often grown as an annual. Having grown it, it acts like an annual for me. It can reseed if happy. I don’t think this will do well down south, but perhaps started in fall, it will over winter and bloom before the heat kicks in. If you have done this, let me know, SampleSeeds@yahoo.com.
100 seeds for $1.25.

.
.
Dianthus barbatus Mix (SWEET WILLIAM) is located on the Buy BIENNIAL Flowers Page.

Dianthus chinensis ‘Baby Doll Mix DiaBDM
Though technically a perennial, the chinensis cultivars are grown as annuals. They come into bloom quickly and stay in bloom all season. The Baby Doll mix has small mounding plants that get covered with blooms of various shade of pink, red, and white in all kinds of different patterns like snow flakes, very pretty.
100+ seeds for $1.25.

.

Again technically a perennial, but quick to bloom so it is most often used as an annual. This mix is a bit taller than Baby Doll making mounds a bit over a foot tall. Full sun.

.
.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERADianthus chinensis var. heddeweigii ‘Black and White’ (Velvet and Lace aka B&W Minstrels) DiaHedBW
I just love these flowers! The double blooms are very striking they are very deep purple giving them a black appearance, and the pinked edges are white. If you like the unusual, this one is for you. Again this is actually a perennial, but chinensis cultivars bloom their first year and are often used as bedding plants. Full sun. 50 seeds for $1.75.

.
.
Dimorphotheca aurantiaca Mix(African Daisy aka Cape Marigold) Dimor
This fast to bloom sun lover gets covered in blooms as shown in the pic at the top of this page. Plants average about 12″ and the 2″ blooms come in white, orange and yellow and apricot. This plant often gets called Osteospermum, but that is incorrect. Osteospermum is another wonderful African daisy that seeds of unfortunately cost a lot. Hopefully that changes. Anyway, If you are a seed saver, Dimorphotheca means two types of seeds coming from the same plant. This is unusual. There are disk shaped seeds and thin crescent shaped seed. 100+ seeds for $1.
Sorry out of stock.
.
.

By customer request~ This old fashion annual is really pretty with its variegation. It grows to about 2′ tall and is a nice contrasting plant in a sunny border. This To see pics on Dave’s Garden, Click Here.
Please note:
if you are ALLERGIC to LATEX you must take care when handling this or any Euphorbia (Which includes Pointsettias.) When stems are broken, a milky latex sap come out. I am allergic, and I still have them. I am careful around my euphorbias. If you accidentally get it on yourself, don’t panic, just go wash your hand immediately.
Winter sowing is recommend for this seed. 50 seeds for $1.50.

Gazania Daybreak Series F1 Z9
I first grew this low growing annual a couple years ago and was so impressed with it. The blooms are gorgeous and large for the plant size. The only downfall this plant has is it must be grown in full sun since the flowers close up without sunlight. Great for pots since they are drought tolerant. Daybreak Rose Stripe, shown in photo to left. Daybreak Pink Shades is shown in the photo to the right. 25 seeds for $1.75.

Gomphocarpus fruticosus aka Asclepias fruticosa (Swan Plant Milkweed aka Cotton Plant) Z10 GomphFr

.
.
gomphocarpus physocarpusGomphocarpusGomphocarpus physocarpus aka Asclepias fruticosa (HAIRY BALLS aka Oscar’s Milkweed) Z7 Gompho
This Milkweed relative has made many a joke on garden forums because of its common name Hairy Balls. This comes from the inflated seeds pods. To see them and other photos of the plant Click Here. This plant is a tender perennial but started early up north, it will bloom its first year and develop balls. It does well in large pots. The seed pods are often used in fall floral arrangements. This plant is a great butterfly caterpillar plant too. Other common names this plant has are – Family Jewels, Pufferfish milkweed; Balloon Cottonbush, and Giant Swan Milkweed.

.
.
Helenium aromaticum (Pinapples) aka Cephalophora aromatica HelAro
This plant has small yellow globe shaped blossom clusters. So it has bit of an odd appearance as it is a helenium that has lost its out ring of petals. It has a wonderful fragrance though and should be planted where you will brush past it to release the scent. It doesn’t grow very tall 12-18″ and is drought tolerant so it is perfect for a pot or edge of a sunny border. 50 seeds for $1.50.

.
.

sunflowerSunflowerOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHelianthus annuus (SUNFLOWER) ‘Field of Sunflowers for Hospice SunFOS
Out on a farm in Niagara County, a farmer planted a whole field of sunflowers for nothing more than pure enjoyment. It was a spectacular sight! The plants are about 5′ tall, and the flowers are a deep yellow. The dark shelled seeds are fairly large so can be used for eating, or just let the birds enjoy them. Many people drove out to see them and take pictures. So many people came, they set up a lemonade stand for Hospice.

Giant Sunflowers ‘Grey Stripe’, ‘Mammoth Russian’, etc. can be found on the Buy Herbs and Lettuce page.

.
.
Helichrysum italicum (Curry Plant) Z8 Helich
This plant has nothing to do with actual curry! It is the scent of the plant that gives it the common name. The foliage of this plant is great it looks like silver rosemary, and where hardy it is evergreen or eversilver, lol. So even without bloom it is a good plant for a sunny border. The blooms are small flat top clusters of yellow flowers that are good for cutting. Click Here for google images. 50 seeds for $1.25.

.
.
.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHeliotrope arborescens ‘Marine Z10 HeliMar
Helioptrope is known for its vanilla scent and beautiful deep blue purple flower clusters. Marine grows to about 1 1/2″ tall. It does well in pots which is good because they should be placed near a sitting area where the scent can be enjoyed. It must be grown in part shade down south. 50 seed for $1.50.

.

Helipterum roseum ‘Double Mix’ (Paper Daisy) aka Acroclinium roseum or Rhodanthe chlorocephala subsp. rosea HelipDM
This mix of everlasting flowers comes in various shades of rose, pink and white. They have double petals and yellow centers. The plants grow to about 2′ tall. They are easy to grow, and of course easy to dry to enjoy all winter inside. 100+ seeds for $1.25.

.
.

Impatiens balfourii ImpBal
This is one of my favorite plants for part shade. The plants get covered in bicolor blooms of white and lavender pink and bloom from summer through fall. The plants grow 2-3′ tall. They are excellent in spots where spring ephemerals grow as they fill in the space those plants make as they go dormant for summer. It is a reseeder, but very easy to remove any that pop up where you don’t want them. These seeds need a cold period to germinate well so I recommend winter sowing. While easy to grow, these are always a difficult one to get seed from because of the small exploding pods! Hence the price of the seed. 15 seeds for $1.50. LIMIT ONE per customer.

Sorry, now out of stock until Fall 2017 harvest.
.
.
Ipomoea alba (Moonflower aka Moon Vine) IpoAlb
This fall bloomer has huge white blooms that open in the evening from large spiraled buds. I’ve read they are fragrant. I forgot to smell them to see! They are still open in the morning in case you missed the night time show. The leaves are heart shaped, and the vines grow 10-20 feet. These take a long time to bloom so I recommend starting them early for northerners. Also northern seed savers please note you will probably not get viable seed since frosts will ruin developing seed. 15 seeds for $1.50.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAmagentajapanesemorningglorycloseupIpomoea nil ‘Early Call Mix’ (Morning Glory) IpoECM
This is a great mix of Japanese morning glory. They come in solid colors as shown and also with a white edge. They are not as vigorous as I. purpurea can be especially for those of you in the south. I’ve found that wintersowing morning glory seeds works really well, no need to soak or scarify the seeds. 25 seeds for $1.25.

ipomoea happy hour rose

happy hour roseOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIpomoea ‘Happy Hour Rose‘ (Dwarf Morning Glory) IpoHHR
This cultivar has variegated tri-lobed leaves and deep pink blooms. It is said to start blooming while the plants are only at 3′ or so and this makes me wonder if it is a mixed species cultivar and not full Ipomoea nil. Whatever it is, it is very pretty. Photo to the left is from Ball Hort. Photo to the right shown is growing with coleus. 25 seeds for $1.50.

.
.
img130Ipomoea nil ‘Kikyo-zaki Mix‘ (Japanese Morning Glory) IpoKik
This is beautiful Japanese Morning Glory. Kikyo means balloon, and I believe that is in reference to how the star shaped blooms resemble Platycodon (Balloon Flower.) The picture shown is of an old packet I received from Korea a long time ago with the translation written on it by the sender. As you can see they come in assorted colors, sometimes with some doubling and are often edged in white. Japanese Morning Glories bloom in late summer and grow to about 6′ in general.

.
.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIpomoea nil ‘Mount Fuji Mix(Japanese Morning Glory) IpoMFM

.
.
Ipomoea indica aka Ipomoea acuminata (Ocean blue Morning Glory) Z9 IpoInd.
This vine is a gorgeous native of the Florida Keys and other southern areas. The flowers start off a beautiful blue and as they age, they lighten and turn to lavender. Grown in the Keys, it is quite tame, but out in other areas with good soil it can be a monster. I’ve read people advise to grow it in a pot. I wish I could tell you if it can be grown as an annual in the ground up north, but I have no experience with it up here. Sun. 25 seeds for $2.00. LIMIT 2 per customer.
Sorry, out of stock until spring 2017.

ipomoea hederaceaIpomoea hederacea (Ivy-Leaved Morning Glory) IpoHed
This morning glory has beautiful blue blooms that are about 2″ in diameter. It is an easy to grow variety that can be grown in pots. It is not as large of a plant as other types of MGs. It should be planted where you will enjoy the morning blooms. 25+ seeds for $1.50.

.
.
Ipomoea lobata aka Mina lobata (Spanish Flag aka Firecracker Vine) MinaLo
This annual vine is quite impressive if grown in the right location. I say this since the first time I grew it, it was in hot dry soil. It sulked and by the time it bloomed in late summer/fall, there were hardly any. But as I usually do with plants, I gave it a second chance. This time in a better location where the soil was better and water more plentiful (near a hanging basket so it got the excess water.) Well it grew like gangbusters to about 10′, very full and lush, and I got a ton of blooms! The blooms are quite unique going from white to yellow to red. The leaves are deeply lobed and attractive. Hummingbird attractor. 15 seeds for $1.50.

.
.

Ipomoea pes-caprae (Railroad Vine aka Beach Morning Glory)
Z9 IpoPCa
This morning glory relative is very useful for beach erosion. The vines do not climb, they grow along the ground setting roots as they go, thus the nickname railroad vine. When in bloom, the lavender flowers are quite showy. Photos can be found on this link. 10 seeds for $2.00
Sorry, now out of stock. Back in stock, hopefully, spring 2017.
.
Ipomoea sloteri aka Ipomoea multifida (Cardinal Climber) IpoSlo
This vine has bright red, hummingbird attracting flowers. The leaves are really neat looking too. This plant is often confused with Ipomoea quamoclit (Cypress Vine) which has very thin leaves. It grows quickly to over 6′ tall. Sun. 25 seeds for $1.25.

.
.
Ipomoea violacea aka I. macrantha aka I. tuba (Beach Moon Flower) IpoVio
This native plant of the Florida Keys is a very large vine that loves to scramble around on the beach areas. It blooms at night with long necked white blooms. The stems are rope like, and the leaves are heart shaped and thick. This plant is for the southern most part of the country where ornamental seaside plants/sand binders are needed. Photo is of flower bud that will open in the evening. Sun. 10(very large) seeds for $1.75.

.
.
cypressvineIpomoea quamoclit ‘Feather Rose’ aka ‘Rose Feather’ (Cypress Vine) IpoQuaFR
Often times you find Cypress vine in mixed colors. I’m happy to be able to offer a solely pink cultivar. This hummingbird attractor has very fine ferny/feathery foliage with long tubular trumpet flowers. Tame up north, it may have the tendency to grow rampantly in the deep south. 25 seeds for $1.25.

.
.
Ipomopsis rubra (Standing Cypress) IRubr
This hummingbird attracting annual should be more well known. It is for full sun to part shade and is drought tolerant which is great for pots. The foliage is ferny and the flowers star-like. It normally thought of as a red flower, but you can also get yellow as seen in my photo and coral too. The plants, to about 2′ for me but I’ve read of taller, are un-branching so they should be planted a few together for best impact. I’ve also read these are biennial, but I’ve always received them as seedlings from a hummingbird loving of mine every spring(I start enough stuff myself!) and they behave as annuals. N. American native. 100+ seeds for $1.25.

.
.
Isotoma axillaris (Blue Star Creeper) aka Laurentia axillaris Z9 IsoBSC
This plant is not very photogenic. It never looks like much of anything in photos. In person though, it is very eye catching. It is excellent for flowing out of pots as it is a profuse bloomer. I was surprised on the garden walk this year (2013) at how many people saw it and wanted to know what it was. It really should be more well known. It has delicate foliage and lavender blue star shaped flowers. Please note, there is a winter hardy Isotoma (Laurentia fluvilatilis,) a mat forming creeper with tiny blue flowers, that people often confuse this plant with. 50 seeds for $1.75.
Sorry, now out of stock. Hopefully back with successful 2017 harvest.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAJacquemontia pentanthos aka J. pentantha (Skyblue Cluster Vine) Z9 JacPen
A relative of Morning Glory, this vine is not well known, but it should be. It has pretty blue disk-like flowers heart shaped leaves. It is native to the Florida Keys and is endangered. I wish I could tell you if it can be grown as an annual like morning glory or in a pot.(If you have experience in a colder zone, please let me know. UPDATE: I was told they can be grown in a decent sized pot.) The seeds were not wild collected. *These may be difficult or slow to germinate, but they are worth the effort. A Ipomoea expert friend of mine suggest sowing in a pot topped with sand and leaving out side in part shade during the growing season making sure to keep the pot moist. A very careful scarification of the seeds might also work.* Sun. 25+ seeds for $2. LIMIT 2 PER CUSTOMER.
